Planning to invest?
This website is set up by the Securities Commission to help you be a smart investor.
Investing is a way to make your money grow so you can use it later to achieve your financial goals. Most of us invest one way or another - whether we realise it or not - even if it's just a bank account or KiwiSaver scheme.
It is important to choose investments that suit you and meet your goals. Understanding about different investments, how they work and how risky they are, will help you choose investments that are right for you.
This website is about investments that are securities - i.e. bank savings accounts and term deposits, debentures, bonds, shares, superannuation schemes, managed funds, contributory mortgages and futures. It does not cover investments such as property, precious metals, art works or stamps.
All investments have some risk. Generally investments that offer high returns are riskier than investments paying lower returns. If you choose to invest for higher returns you must be sure you are comfortable taking a higher level of risk.
Despite recent high profile finance company collapses and closures in some other investments, New Zealand has a robust investment environment and a sound financial system. The experiences of the last few years also reinforce the need to do your homework before investing and to understand the level of risk that comes with each investment so that you can have investments that are right for you.
New Zealand law requires businesses that are seeking public investment to provide information to help investors and their professional advisers in their decisionmaking.
This website sets out some questions you should ask when investing, and helps you find the answers so that you better understand investing and make the choices that are right for you.
